LANGKAWI, 15 January. – Race Day 4 of the 14th RLIR 2016 got off to a late start. The breeze just wasn’t there until around 11.30am and began filling in on the eastern edge of the harbour.
Once that was determined, the PRO got ready to race with the black windward mark at 1.5 miles up the course and the red triangle at 0.9 of a mile. The breeze appeared to settle at 120 degrees at 4 to 5 knots.
Setting a course on this side of the harbour that runs toward the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club proved to be a formidable task with the light winds, shallows on one side and a reef on the other. It was low tide and to top it all off, a drifting fuel barge sat in the middle of the course.
Despite these challenges, two races were set for the Racing, IRC-1, IRC-2 and Sport Boats Classes and one for the Multihulls. The Club Cruisers, Ocean Rovers and White Sails were given the day off.
Jelik was the first off the start line as the Racers left at 11.45am to tackle the course. Millenium Racing took Race 7, handing the reins to Alive in Race 8 but keeping her No. 1 spot on the leader board.
Scott Bradley got a chance to show off Emagine’s performance in the light winds, finishing second in Race 7 and first in Race 8. Emagine is now ahead of Fujin and Uranus in the overall standings with only one more day of racing to go.
IRC-2 was sent off on a shortened version of the course and the yachts followed Foreign Affair right around the course for her first line honours of the regatta, giving her the overall lead ahead of the more seasoned Phoenix and Mata Hari.
After playing second fiddle to SMU in Race 7, Team RLYC stepped up their game to take Race 8 and the overall lead, while avenging their loss on Thursday in the Sports Boats Class.
Barely a month old, Allegro finally got a chance to shine among the Multihulls, and although only a few seconds separated her from WOW, she was nevertheless the one out in front and at the top.
The fifth and final day of racing will take place on Saturday to mark the end of the 14th Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2016.
