LANGKAWI: The just concluded sixth Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) witnessed the coming of age of Malaysian sailors in the racing class categories.
Although the local sailors are more comfortable competing in the smaller dinghy, optimist and sports boat events, the ability to take on the big boys in the racing classes has begun to take root.

QUANTUM Racing won the Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy after coming out tops at the Royal International Langkawi Regatta yesterday. After eight races the boat skippered by Ray Roberts won three races, was second in four and third in one and beat its competitors with consistent performances.

After a short delay for the wind to increase, racing got underway on the final race of the regatta. Once again the course was set close to Kuah town and the spectacle could be viewed from the balcony of the yacht club and hotels lining the shore.

The day started well with 12 to 15 knots and lumpy seas for race 5 held offshore from Langkawi. Unfortunately as the day wore on the breeze faded towards the end of race 5 and although a gallant effort was made to complete race 6 the race committee's hands were forced to abandon the attempt due to a lack of wind.
