A WINNING PACKAGE
The third Royal Langkawi International Regatta was once again hosted by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and BMW. Numbers were down to 47 entrants, not unexpected after the recent December 26th Tsunami.
A sensible decision by the organizers bringing the regatta forward to early March, and into the more dominant monsoon wind and weather patterns, paid off with constant breezes giving excellent sailing conditions.

This Year's Regatta In Langkawi the Best Yet Despite Smaller Field
Langkawi, 7 March 2005 - The third edition of the BMW Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR), which ended on Saturday, proved to be the most exciting and challenging yet in the series.
Although the number of entries dwindled this year, it has to be noted that the tournament organisers managed to host a successful regatta in South-East Asian waters during the post-tsunami period.

Collision Between Fistral and Regolarita Spoils the Day
Langkawi, 5 March 2005 - YO! captured its third consecutive BMW Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR)'s Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy yesterday but it was nature that stole the thunder, and the biggest talking point of the day was a collision between two yachts.
Choppy waves and wind speeds of up to 21 knots, the highest ever registered in the three-year history of the RLIR, made conditions challenging.

Ulumulu's Young Crew Making Heads Turn at Regatta
Langkawi, 4 March 2005 - Six months ago, an idea was mooted to have a Malaysian racing yacht with an all-Malaysian crew to challenge for top sailing honours in the region.

Navy Boat Beats Somtam on Corrected Time in Race 3
Langkawi, 3 March 2005 - Stronger winds bring more exciting sailing conditions in competitions, including the ongoing BMW Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2005.
But the Royal Malaysian Navy boats Kapal Diraja Pelanduk (KDP) I and II are hoping for less wind for the final two days of the competition tomorrow and Saturday.

Royal Langkawi International Regatta
Langkawi, 3 March 2005 - At most top class events, the early winners are usually the most prepared and aim to build on their success, or as they say in the classics "the rich get richer".

Smooth Sailing for Somtam
Langkawi, 28 February 2005 - The tsunami-lashed Somtam Express clinched a second consecutive victory in the Phuket to Langkawi Rebak Champagne Run 2005 yesterday.
The Thailand-registered boat, which was berthed at the Ao Chalong Yacht Club in Phuket, suffered minor damages when the tsunami struck on Dec 26 last year.

Royal Langkawi Yacht Club came through the Tsunami caused by the Indonesian earthquake with no damage. The orientation and position of the marina provided shelter from direct impact, and the excellent engineering of the marina stood up to the repeated increase and decrease in water levels without any problem.

This year's event attracted numbers that allowed for two divisions Racing Multihull and Cruising Multihull. This is again another first for the area giving cruising multihulls the chance to compete in their own division.
