  THEY GOT RHYTHM
  By Jane Clarke

Aseana Percussion Unit (APU) have been beating their way into people’s hearts throughout the regatta with their fusion of east and west ‘World Music’.

The members of this very versatile and multi-instrumental playing band are Malaysian grown. The band name comes not as a reflection of the ethnicity of the band members but from the origins of the instruments they play.

Their music is created with the Malay kompang and gendang, Indian tabla and taviel, Trinidad steelpan, African djombe, Native American pow wow drum, Brazilian surdo, Australian didgeridoo, the flute and other percussion instruments. They are always looking for ways to wow their audience and enjoy experimenting with regular household items or whatever they can lay their hands on!

We have enjoyed their diverse traditional and jazz performances throughout the week and look forward to ’getting down’ with them again in their entirety at the closing ceremony. Keep your eye out for their album ‘Colours of Rhythm’. Want more information, check out their website www.apu.com.my
