A Test of Seamanship at Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2011
Langkawi, 13 January 2011 - Any sailor can thrive during strong winds. But it is a real test of seamanship to race in abysmal wind conditions plaguing these few days at Royal Langkawi International Regatta.
The wind peaked at 7 to 8 knots today. The participants had to wait for the wind to pick up before making their way to the starting line. The race started earlier today at about 12.25pm after a little hiccup when Evolution Racing became entangled with the ropes.
Hi Fi strikes again as champion for Day 2 Race 3 in the Racing Class. Skippered by world champion Neil Pryde, it completed the race in 02:39:02. Jelik 5 skippered by Tiffany Koo came a close second at 02:42:54. Evolution Racing (02:45:25) which was second yesterday, emerged in the fourth place today after EFG Bank Mandrake (02:44:23).
Principal Race Officer Mark Pryke announced that due to unfavourable wind conditions in the foreseeable future, the races will be confined nearer to the harbour. The round island race which was supposed to be held tomorrow will be postponed to Saturday, pending weather conditions.
Nevertheless, he has this to say about Langkawi: "It is a most beautiful place to hold a regatta. The natural landscape is so very picturesque and breathtaking. I pray that God will send more wind so that we can do the round island race this Saturday."
