EAGLE NEWSLETTER 2008

In the Navy - while most may consider 13 an unlucky number, any yacht in trouble during the RLIR 2008 can consider themselves very lucky with the PX13 on callIt's sometimes hard to appreciate all the people involved in running something as big as the RLIR 2008. Without the help of the Malaysian marine police it would be difficult to imagine how it could be run at all.

Captain Ma'mor with his two officers and 15 men are on the starter boat - the 28-meter 'Pekan' or PX13 - for the duration fo this racing week.

PX13 built by Vosper Thornycroft in the old ship yards of Singapore was launched in 1969. Built specifically for the Malaysian Navy she has been on duty cruising the Malacca straits keeping a lookout for pirates, illegal immigrant boats and perhaps assisting the odd yachtie or two along the way. Sometimes, duty calls her to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and even East Malaysia.

Build from wood planking with a steel superstructure, she is a very light 65 tons and with 2500 HP can achieve 25 KTS. PX13 carries 9000 liters of fuel and only uses a very reasonable 200 liters per hour. Amazingly she has the original twin MTU-V12's that she was fitted with almost 50 years ago.

On her bow is a 9mm gun with two more on each side that are referred to as general purpose guns but these have been temporarily removed because of the RLIR 2008.

For Laughs

A good friend recently fell in love. He found the boat of his dreams and bought it. He was thrilled. His wife was not so thrilled. For his birthday she gave him a set of golf clubs.

Recently a hole was found in the wall of the RLYC women's shower room. Security personnel are looking into it.

Sea: a body of water providing abundant opportunities for drowning.
Sailor: one who has not yet drowned.
