EAGLE NEWSLETTER 2008
Sailors out on the Bass Harbour courses the last two days have surely noticed the large white three-masted sailing ship anchored there. This is the 250-foot (76m) barquentine LILI MARLEEN.
One tends to think ships like this belong to another century as she makes quite a contrast to the high tech racing boats participating in the regatta. The LILI MARLEEN is owned by the Halim Mazmin Group. Also owned by the same company is the STS PUTERI MAHSURI, a 65-meter barque, that does sail training with the Royal Malaysian Navy and is often seen anchored in Langkawi waters too.
Just seeing one of these majestic sailing ships anchored off the shores of Langkawi is a pleasure in itself, but to be lucky enough to see two of them adorn Bass Harbour, well... it truly does look like one is gazing over the bay of 200 years ago.
Built in Germany for the Peter Deilmann company, she was not a conversion as so many others are but was fitted out with exclusive yacht chartering in mind. The interior is characteristically maritime with luxury accommodation for 50 guests in 25 outside cabins all tastefully decorated and, as one would expect, wach with en-suite bathrooms.
With 13,000 square foot of sail, the LILI MARLEEN can cruise along at a very reasonable 12 KTS while one relaxes on deck lulled by the gentle sound of the wind in the sails.
Whilst still part of the Peter Deilmann fleet the LILI MARLEEN sailed throughout the year in the Galapagos Islands but is now staying close to home, mainly cruising the waters of Malaysia.
With modern diesel propulsion, a huge 600KW generator and all the modern comforts including air-conditioning, a bar, and even resident entertainers, the LILI MARLEEN is certainly the top end of the chartering industry.
