EAGLE NEWSLETTER 2008
The Eagle joins with the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in welcoming everyone to Langkawi. Between races it is hoped that you will find the time to explore our beautiful island. There is something for everyone here, from the grandeur of the western mountains with its hiking trails and spectacular views, to its lovely harbours, its many venues where the visitor can have a more intimate view of our natural wonders. A quick drive could take you around some of the more popular spots in one day.
Drive west from town to Pantai Cenang and discover the "Underwater World," Langkawi's newly redesigned aquarium. The big shark tank is one of the most popular attractions. A personal favourite though is the otter habitat, which never fails to fascinate.
Go north, past the airport to Telaga Harbour next to Pantai Kok where a variety of small restaurants are arranged around the yacht harbour. The U.S.S.R. bar and restaurant is popular. Just a short distance farther along are two of Langkawi’s most popular attractions; the Telaga Tujuh (Seven Wells) waterfalls and the cable car to the top of Gunung Matchinchang. The view from the top, of Langkawi as well as the Thai islands to the north, is simply spectacular.
Head northeast across the centre of the island and a mile or two up the road there is a sign advertising the crocodile farm, and near the end of this side road there is a small waterfall. Continuing on the main road will bring you to the northern beaches. Some miles farther there is a roundabout where you head back toward Kuah. A mile or two along this road there is a sign for Durian Peringin waterfall, one of the nicest on the island.
Finally, a few miles short of Kuah, you will come to the "Bird Paradise," where there are many Langkawi birds including the iconic sea eagle, several species of hornbill and white egrets. It is especially nice that many of the birds here are not in enclosures, but simply moving around the interior garden.
By this time, you may need a well-deserved rest and Kuah, as well as Charlie's Place at the RLYC, are a short distance away. For the visitor with a little more time an excellent resource is Langkawi: A Paradise in Eco-Tourism, by James N. Naidu.
